Day 5 - Slow Progress

Posted by Sam Woollard

I actually thought that today was going to be a really good day, the weather was dry - a bit windy and cold to start with but at least not raining - the first part of the drains was in and working and our two workmen turned up right on time. However as I write this at 4.00pm not a lot has happened, we have had a visit from the architect, who seemed OK with our changed layout, a call from the building inspector who has approved the slope of the drains and a brief visit from Tony our builder who had to leave rapidly when he had to answer an emergency call, (he is a retained fireman). Tony has been out most of the day as apparently, ie according to Nick our architect, there is a multiple car wreck somewhere on Tavistock road.

However we did get the first line of blocks in today which will take us up to DPC (damp proof course) level and they are shown on the picture as evidence that something has happened. There was also a bit more earth digging involving Marcus and his beloved JCB digger and he scraped out some more earth for the drains and also did a sort of hole where the post that supports the roof will go. Much measuring has also occurred today and mysterious red spray painted marks have appeared on the ground and on some of the new blocks, we also seem to have got a lot more string around today, most of it at right angles to each other. I'm unsure what it's all for but I know that it does get in the way when I'm taking photographs. I did a bit of measuring of my own today just to re-assure myself that our large double sink vanity unit will fit and that we have room to get through the doorway - now that's a good question I've just asked myself. I know the vanity will fit when it is in there, but can we actually get it though the gap where the entry to the bathroom will be? I had better check that in case we have to position it before the walls go up! We probably need to buy our shower bases soon too, particularly the one in the master bathroom which we would like to be large and shallow - we are thinking 1200mm x 900mm x 40mm high maximum. I have found a couple of suppliers, one in enamelled steel and one in stone but have held off ordering until the builders are absolutely certain that there will not be an "elf 'n safety" issue with its height and position. I am surprisingly re-assured by Nick the architect and Tony the builder that it is all going pretty much according to plan and if the weather holds progress should be reasonably swift. With rapid progress in mind Hilary and I thought again about storage (I did get some vacuum storage bags over the weekend) and did some rapid sucking of duvets, pillows etc. so that we have less volume to store. Hilary also spent several hours trying on all her clothes from her wardrobe and setting aside those that no longer fit ready for our next visit to the charity shop. We may be slow today but we are getting there.

Hello Grandma and Grandpa! I'm making my list of yum yums that I would like you to bring over early, so I don't forget later. Tinned spag, cheddars, french frys, penguins, knick knacks (not sure that's spelled right), worchester sauce flavored chips (if you can find them), and twiglets. Thanks!
Looks like it's all coming along, slowly but surely. Can't wait to see it when it's all finished.
xoxo
