Day 52 What a muddle

Posted by Sam Woollard

Progress was steady today with Tony adding radiators in the kitchen and the lobby loo, Simon, Marcus and Tom lined out the master bedroom and the master bathroom so I expect that Simon will start plastering it tomorrow. This first photo shows how he has prepared the room so that he can start the ceiling first thing. It seems to be the way that he works, ceiling first, then opposing walls, then the opposite two walls. Apparently it is not possible to have two wet walls next to each other, not sure why.

John the electrician finished the wiring for the lights today and has said that they check out OK. We have no switches and only one light fitting but I think that there is a good chance that one day next week we may be able to go for a midnight pee without taking a torch with us. Incidentally no sign of Sam and they still clam up when his name is mentioned so I think that his days as a builder at Middle Chub Tor have come to an end.

Hilary and I spent most of the day tiling the upstairs bathroom, I broke one tile trying to stitch drill a square so I abandoned that technique and use straight cuts instead, however that wasn't an option for the tile with the fresh air vent hole in it. I did manage to stitch drill that one but I wrecked two masonry drills doing it, for the other two vents I will buy a masonry jig saw bit and see if that helps. Of course Simon came over and gave me advice as to what tools I needed to buy, but most of his options were for someone who needs to do it on a regular basis and that is certainly not my intention.

The rest of today's photos are just to show you what chaos we are currently living in, each time that a radiator or a power socket needs to be fitted we need to move boxes, furniture and odds and ends from one place to another and back again. We know that it is coming to an end and Tony confidently predicted today that all the internal work on their part will be completed before we leave for holiday. There will still be work on the outside to do and of course we will have a helluva lot of decorating when we get back but it will be all action before then as we have to tile and lay floors in the new bathrooms before Tony can finalise the plumbing and put up the shower cubicle and door. Incidentally it may be July and we even had sunshine amongst the thunderstorms today, but we have lit a fire in the living room every night for the last week. This is mainly to keep warm but it also has the benefit of drying out the walls that get wet as we have no cowl on the chimney and the rain comes down into it.

The final picture for tonight shows the destruction in the kitchen caused by my old inadequate wiring. I had to break off the tiles that we had lovingly put on only few years back, I tried to save them by prising them off carefully and managed to get some of those with pictures on but even those had so much old tile cement on them that they can't be used and in the end they were all put in a bag to go to the tip tomorrow. I only took down those necessary for John to do his wiring but I also had to take down two of the kitchen cabinets. When the new sockets are in that should complete the power wiring and then it will just be a matter of putting on all the sockets and testing the circuits. Oh I forgot that he still has to run a cable and a box for the cooker and sockets for the fridge, igniter for the gas hob and the cooker hood. So perhaps the power wiring won't be completed tomorrow after all. Then there's the garage wiring, another story and one that will require a lot of digging on my part - maybe that won't be done before we go on holiday after all.

Last day of the working week tomorrow and we are off for our weekly Crowndale Tip run, see you later.
